Warrior
Inspired by ‘The Domesday Stone’ displayed at Lindisfarne Priory, this piece was written after an immersive visit to the Holy Isle. After spending a whole day exploring and reading up on the history of the environment, It isn’t hard to see why people living on the island felt a close connection to God.
Knowing the history, it was also hard not to imagine Viking ships on the horizon and the fear that would have struck the hearts of inhabitants in 793 AD. The Viking invasion on Lindisfarne sent shock waves through Europe and changed our cultural lives forever.
Featured in the artwork you will find ‘Eadfrith’ the 10th century monk responsible for single handedly writing and illuminating the Lindisfarne Gospels. See also the Celtic cross; a symbol of peace, strength and unity to Christians, as well as the ruins of the Abbey behind.
This short but intense track is my attempt on re-creating ‘The Domesday Stone’ with sound. The thunderstorm sample on this track was recorded in May 2022 on a trip to France. A fierce weather system passed through the valley and I was quick to capture it on a Zoom microphone. I thought it was appropriate to include it on this track as severe storms are common out at sea, the people living on the North-East coast will have been familiar with their shore battering effects. The sound is also synonymous with the severity of the attacks imposed by the Vikings.
