about

Salt
Home has always been near the water. The sight of white waves and sea carved coves have always been a comfort. The view of the coast is most spectacular from the top of Souter Lighthouse. Built in 1871 to ward ships from the dangerous rocks at Whitburn Steel, Souter was the first lighthouse in the world purpose built to use electricity.
‘Salt’ is written from the perspective of the ocean and what it has seen come and go on shore over the years. History is made by the inhabitants of places, and I often wondered as a child what creatures watched from the water as events unfolded on land. Marsden is known as ‘The Lost Village’ (see image featured to the left of the lighthouse). Built as a mining village in 1874, Marsden was a thriving community of 700 people. Once the mine closed in the 1960s the village was demolished, and residents moved to settle in nearby Whitburn, the once thriving community now nothing but a ghost story .
I have visited Souter Lighthouse and The Leas many times in my life, and it has always been my muse. I hoped to capture the feeling of movement and change within a wall of sound and a layering of images which reflect the hustle and bustle of life on land but also the constant flux of the ocean. The sample sound for this piece is the sound of lapping waves just down the coast at Seaburn beach, near where I grew up.
