about

Holy
This track is directly linked to the York Gospel, a 1000-year-old book I came across whilst on a winter visit to York. Around A.D. 990, the monks at Saint Augustine’s monastery in Canterbury, England, made an illuminated copy of the four gospels of the New Testament. This parchment manuscript is one of the oldest books in Europe and is still used in ceremonies in York Minster today.
These Medieval manuscripts, carefully curated and conserved, represent not only an irreplaceable documentary record but also a remarkable reservoir of biological information. When I first laid eyes on this magnificent artefact, I was stunned to learn it contained within it Letters from King Cnut as well as hymns and prayers from its publishing year and a wealth of other ecclesiastical information. The book is one of only a small collection of pre-conquest Gospel books to have survived the Reformation.
The loop audio features a small quotation of a melody written in the year 990AD - thus literally bringing historical music back to modern ears. This repeating phrase inspired by the ancient melody is answered each time by a more complex layer of harmony which metaphorically represents thousands of years of history being layered upon the first pages of the gospel.
The found sound sample, a bell tolling in the background, was recorded whilst walking through the ancient city of Domme in France. The inspiration for this piece was indeed the idea that the thread of faith is woven so deep into history’s great tapestry, it transcends the limits of time and distance. ‘God’ will exist in one form or another in every human ideology for eternity, thus the tolling church bell is reminiscent of repeated religious patterns in history and the sound itself emanates a call to spirituality.
Notice the quotation is featured in the visual, along with the image of St.Bede featured in one of the minsters many stained glass windows.
